David Bowie's Heathen (2002) is widely considered by critics and fans to be one of his finest, most confident albums since 1980's Scary Monsters. It marked the long-awaited reunion with producer Tony Visconti, who helped blend Bowie's signature melancholic 1970s art-rock atmosphere with a polished, modern production.
Critics overwhelmingly praised the album as a triumphant "return to form." While some of Bowie's 90s records felt like he was chasing contemporary trends, Heathen feels mature, comfortable, and self-assured. It balances cryptic, avant-garde themes with deeply accessible, melodic pop-rock. Though much of the record was written before and finalized shortly after the September 11 attacks, giving it a palpable undercurrent of anxiety and mourning, it never feels overly heavy or overwrought.
