Plaatbarak #02 - Kuryakin & Bruno Couseé

28 June 2019

So, tonight it's round two of the Music Mania curated DJ sets at Monterey (Citadelpark, next to the Kiosk). Up this week are Monterey's very own Kuyakin & Bruno Couseé, we did a little interview with these two and you can read it right here!

Plaatbarak deejay #1: Kuryakin

1) What new record you recently bought blew you away?

OUTRO TEMPO II: ELECTRONIC AND CONTEMPORARY MUSIC FROM BRAZIL, 1984-1996

Great leftfield and ambient stuff from Brazil compiled by John Gomez on Music From Memory. The first edition is awesome too.

2) Which record is intertwined inseparably with Music Mania for you?

I guess it must be all time favourite and disco classic It Should Have Been You by Gwen Guthrie. A couple of years ago I entered the shop and this one was playing. I recognized it instantly from the dancefloor and bought it at that moment. A true classic with amazing production by all time heroes Sly & Robbie and an amazing remix by Larry Levan, another all time hero. It’s also one of the many disco classics Lorin recommended me through the years. Thanks Lorin for the great music! :-)

3) Let’s go back into time. The annual holidays with your parents, a long and warm drive to the South of France. Which tape or cd was on repeat for hours in the car?

I remember a certain trip to Italy when I took a lot of cd’s with me and this was on repeat for so long because of the fact that it is a very diverse album and my whole family could relate to it.

Another classic for road trips is the debut album by Vampire Weekend. It’s not the most obscure record but to me this is the perfect record to play when you’re driving around in a hot and sunny country and feel like singing along to some catchy pop songs. Their formula has been repeated endlessly now and I’m quite bored of their sound but I remember when this came out, it really appealed to me and was the soundtrack of many endless summers.

4) Sunday morning, breakfast & coffee: what would be the first record you put the needle on?

https://www.musicmaniarecords.be/10-eden-ahbez/18-edens-island-the-music-of-an-enchanted-isle/

EDEN'S ISLAND (THE MUSIC OF AN ENCHANTED ISLE) - EDEN AHBEZ

An amazing record to chill out on and something that was recommended to me by the Mania crew. Exotic music with dreamy poetry.

5) You, a record player and a room full of music connoisseurs: which record do you put on?

https://www.musicmaniarecords.be/703-talk-talk/3081-spirit-of-eden/

Because I don’t like music snobs, I guess I would play something really mainstream. Just kidding, I think I would play SPIRIT OF EDEN by TALK TALK. Every music lover has to know it and I think most of them do. I knew it was a special album but due to circumstances I guess I never gave it a shot. When a friend told me I had to listen to it the day Mark Hollis died, I gave it a listen and was blown away.

6) Which Belgian record do you cherish the most?

https://www.musicmaniarecords.be/51-max-berlin/84-elle-et-moi/

ELLE ET MOI by MAX BERLIN that was released by Music Mania itself and it has a special place in my heart because I wrote the promotional text for it when Lorin or Adriaan were looking for someone to write the text. I mentioned that I had a Master in Translation and gave it a shot. Adriaan and Lorin were very pleased and they gave me a very nice discount for a whole year. :-)

Another recent Belgian record I’ve been into is GULDEN ONVERSNEDEN by KLEIN VOLK, which is a Ghent based duo playing very relaxing synth music with a twist. I love it.

7) What record is still missing from the shelves of your collection?

https://www.musicmaniarecords.be/2726-rupa/5149-disco-jazz/

I’m looking forward to buying DISCO JAZZ by RUPA, which is a very expensive release and is being reissued in July. Great balearic Indian stuff, I love it! Will work on the dancefloor too!

8) Which record stands out for its remarkable artwork?

https://www.musicmaniarecords.be/tag/outsider-stroom/

I really love the artwork of STROOM’s releases so I would say all of them. Great work, Ziggy & Nana!

9) What record will be the highlight of your set at Monterey? And why?

https://www.musicmaniarecords.be/348-tim-maia/3324-disco-club/

Disco Music Club by Tim Maia is a great record I bought recently. I really like the track Sossego. It has a very great summery feel to it and is perfect for chilling out in the park.
