Tony- and Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell (Hadestown, Bonny Light Horseman, Big Red Machine) returns with her first solo album in more than a decade.
The self-titled album will be released on January 28, 2022, with the ten tracks produced by Josh Kaufman. Featured musicians are Kaufman himself as well as Michael Lewis, JT Bates, Thomas Bartlett and Aaron Dessner. The string and flute arrangements are by Nico Muhly. A Vermont native who has been called "one of the greatest songwriters of her generation" by NPR, Mitchell is a world champion of narrative folk song, poetry and balladry. The ten songs on her album are a perfect demonstration of her skills.
During the pandemic and nine months pregnant, she left Brooklyn and moved back to her native Vermont. And so the album is also about how Mitchell found her way back to her roots there, which have shaped her life and music so much. "Bright Star" is about how she finds peace in the familiar surroundings of her grandparents' home.
