He played second guitar for various Canadian indie bands for years, but now Evan Uschenko suddenly has to release all his creative juices. "Anne, If" is his second solo album in less than a year. Does that Ghost Woman pseudonym testify to his disregard for trends—now that artists like Girl Band are forced to change their names—or to a timeless dreaminess? Uschenko seems both a hipster with a wink and a highly sensitive human being. He combines the "Look how easy it is" vibe of Pavement with the slightly bewildered emotionality of Kurt Vile. In the single "Broke," he thus couples a demo-like nonchalance with a sophisticated arrangement. The entire album alternates between cozy Weltschmerz and solos borrowed from the 70s. Only in "The End of a Gun" does he seem to be offended, but only by eagerly biting into a tender guitar solo. Delicious.
