Modern gypsy jazz has been a blind spot in everyone's vinyl collection for decades; the successors to Django Reinhardt opted for the compact disc in the 90s and beyond, often pressed up in limited amounts to be sold at their live gigs. Mr Reinhardt's country of birth proved to be a fertile breeding ground for a distinctively eclectic type of swing manouche; the no man's land on the Dutch/Belgian border was the preferred place to set up camp for a lot of gypsy (or 'zigeuner' in Flemish) musicians, far away from the public eye. There, real craftsmanship was pursued in tireless playing sessions that could last an entire day.
The SVR label puts the main players of the scene on wax for the very first time on this charming ten inch record. A colourful cast of characters blends Sinti tradition with French chanson, influences from Eastern Europe and electric jazz. Whether it's the breakneck speed of Jimmy Rosenberg, the unique retro approach by grandmaster Fapy Lafertin or the soulful violin of Tcha Limberger: this compelling selection shows why these musicians are held in high regard worldwide.
