With Powertrip, Monster Magnet catapulted themselves from the underground to the mainstream in 1998. The fourth album by the New Jersey band is an uninhibited celebration of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle, packed with heavy guitar riffs and irresistible hooks. Led by charismatic frontman Dave Wyndorf, they traded their earlier psychedelic stoner rock for a more accessible, stadium-filling sound. The breakthrough came with the iconic single "Space Lord," an anthem that dominated the airwaves. Powertrip is a confident and energetic statement, steeped in the classic themes of sex, drugs, and science fiction. The album sounds grand and remains an essential work in their discography to this day.
The music on Powertrip is a powerful mix of hard rock and stoner rock. The album combines the heaviness of bands like Black Sabbath with the sprawling atmospheres of space rock and the directness of classic arena rock.
