He is backed by an eleven-piece ensemble featuring top musicians such as Eric Dolphy and Jaki Byard. The music bursts with energy and masterfully combines blues, gospel, and Mingus's characteristic orchestrated chaos. The album is known as a key work in his extensive oeuvre.
