Richter's approach explores the main character's familial feelings through intimate music. He addresses this psychological landscape by bringing a ritualistic quality to the score, while the themes of departure and loss are represented by a sense of sonic decay, relying on the instrumentation of a few sounds supported by pianos and harps.
