The year is 1964. Almost out of nowhere, a little-known and under-regarded director like Sergio Leone reinterprets an Akira Kurosawa film in a Western style. By assembling all the right pieces that contribute to the making of a film, with a touch of intuition, he establishes new rules for the "spaghetti western" genre, sparking an endless series of imitations.
"A Fistful of Dollars" wouldn't have the same impact without the inimitable music composed by Ennio Morricone, who, as it happened, was an old elementary school classmate of the director. Curiously, two arrangements that Morricone had already developed two years earlier were chosen for the main themes; with the lyrics removed and Alessandro Alessandroni's unmistakable whistle added, the spaghetti sound was finally complete!
The film was an incredible success, and catapulted Leone, Morricone, and especially actor Clint Eastwood into the ranks of the Greats. The soundtrack was released for the first time the following year, along with that of Sergio Leone's subsequent work, "For a Few Dollars More."
This reissue features the seven tracks from the original score in new artwork.
