Description

With Ballads, John Coltrane demonstrates how he could completely make even well-known repertoire his own. While his period with Impulse! Records is often associated with groundbreaking albums like A Love Supreme and Ascension, this release reveals a more subdued side of his artistry. Together with pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones, Coltrane approaches classic standards with attention, energy, and his own musical signature. Thanks to the direct working method in the studio, the performances retain a spontaneous quality, making familiar songs sound fresh and lively once again. Ballads underscores Coltrane’s versatility as a bandleader and his ability to give diverse material new expressive power.
