The compilation *Spiritual Jazz 19 - West Coast USA Pt.1: 50s & 60s* is being released on Jazzman as a double LP and brings together early traces of spiritual, modal-inflected, West Coast–oriented jazz from the 1950s and 1960s. The collection focuses on pieces that emerged outside the mainstream and document the atmospheric diversity of the regional scene.
West Coast jazz is presented here not just as the cool, sharply contoured style of the fifties, but as an open field in which modal-harmonic experimentation, Afro-centered influences, and spiritual approaches merge. Jazzman places the compilation within the cultural context of Los Angeles’ Central Avenue, the spirit of change of the 1960s, and the era’s political as well as religious currents, including Black Power movements and new spiritual currents. At the same time, independent U.S. labels come into focus as engines for unconventional sonic ideas.
The program of this first volume includes, among others, recordings by Chico Hamilton, Victor Feldman, Les McCann, Buddy Collette, Curtis Amy, Harold Land, and Charles Lloyd, ranging from chamber-style formations to more open, modal-tinged ensembles. The selection emphasizes stylistic breadth and historical relevance: well-known names meet lesser-known rarities, making the compilation a focused survey of that creative period on the U.S. West Coast.
