Considered one of the most important albums of the Tropicália movement and of Brazilian music history, Tropicália: ou Panis et Circensis ("Bread and Circuses") was released in Brazil in 1968 and created through the collaboration of several artists, including Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Zé, Os Mutantes, and Gal Costa. Rogério Duprat contributed the albumʼs arrangements, while Torquato Neto participated as a lyricist. The album is regarded as the manifesto of the Tropicalismo movement. It was ranked No. 2 on Rolling Stone Brazil's list of the 100 greatest Brazilian albums of all time. The songs “Baby” and the title track were voted the 30th and 7th greatest Brazilian songs, respectively, by the Brazilian edition of Rolling Stone.The group photograph of the musicians featured on the album cover is a tribute to the cover of The Beatles' album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
